... is a delightful relaxed and picturesque Victorian Spa town with outstanding architectural features, beautiful gardens, preserved woodland, and a mile of curving, golden sands. Pictured is Britain's oldest water-balanced cliff lift which drops down to Saltburn's 600ft long Victorian Pier, the last one standing on the Yorkshire Riviera. ... is the historic fishing village that we look down on from Staithes View. With its cobbled streets and coble fishing boats, it was home to Captain Cook and its picture postcard beauty has made it a magnet for TV and movie producers - Old Jack's Boat, Hetty Wainthrop, Rick Stein, The Fast Show, and Gone Fishing with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse have all filmed there, as did Daniel Day-Lewis in his 2017 movie The Phantom Thread. The RNLI hut and the Staithes Heritage Centre are well worth a visit and there are excellent galleries pubs and cafes to enjoy.

7 mins. Scaling Dam...

... is just up the road from Staithes View and a fabulous venue for many water sports including sailing, windsurfing. open water swimming paddle boarding, power boat helming, kayaking, canoeing camping and picnics. It's also a magnet for fishing and caters for anglers of all levels, with thousands of fish to catch including carp, bream, tench, roach, rudd, pike and perch.

21 mins. The NY Moors Steam Railway...

...is an amazing heritage railway that became famous worldwide when the Hogwarts Express ran on its tracks in the Harry Potter movies. It runs through the Esk Valley from Grosmont to Pickering also to Whitby. Its 24 miles of track is owned and operated by a charitable trust, with 100 full time staff and over 550 volunteers. The trains run daily from the beginning of April to the end of October, and on weekends and selected holidays during the winter. Services are mostly steam-hauled, there are dining services on some evenings and weekends, and the views from beginning to end are fabulous.

11 mins. Port Mulgrave...

...is one of the best locations for collecting for fossil hunting in North Yorkshire with a wide range of ammonites, dinosaur/reptile remains and much more. There is an uneven path that will take you down to the beach and it's quite a steep walk back up. It's a beautiful secluded spot and on the Cleveland Way.

31 mins. Falling Foss...

... is the perfect spot for a magical woodland walk. It's a beautiful circular route circular route that passes an idyllic woodland tea garden and the 30-foot Falling Foss waterfall, before returning alongside May Beck. It’s a delightfully shady walk on a warm summer's day – and truly spectacular in autumn when the woodland colours are at their best.

12 mins. Runswick Bay...

has an incredible sandy beach - the Sunday Times reckoned it was the best in the UK in 2020 - and this former fishing village is a great spot for bucket-and-spade day on the beach. It's a great spot for paddle boarding or kayaking and lovely coastal walks north and south of the village, including incredible views from Kettleness

18 mins Sandsend...

... is a couple of miles north of Whitby - you can see the Abbey and Whitby pier from the beach - but far quieter, and a great place for a day out at the extremely long and sandy beach. There are some great places to eat in Sandsend and some fabulous walks including the 15,000 acres of Mulgrave Woods. The woodland is open from dawn until dusk all year on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, but closed to the public throughout May.

11 mins. Skinningrove...

is a little-known gem, and the lovely beach there isn't immediately obvious - even when you get down to the sea front. From the small gravel car park, walk along the sea wall, through a gateway, and you come to this beautiful stretch of golden sand. There's no food or facilities of any kind so take your own, however it's a fabulous spot for a walk or a day on the beach.

25 mins. Whitby...

... is famous worldwide - it's where Captain Cook set sail on his first sea journey and where Dracula landed in the UK in Bram Stoker's novel. With its historic Abbey, 199 steps, Pannett Park, marina, arcades, cafes, pubs restaurants and at least half a dozen of the best fish and chip shops in the country, it's a magnet for lovers of all things Goth and It can get extremely busy in the summer - using the park and ride

26 mins. Roseberry Topping...

... with its distinctive half-cone summit, is 1,049 feet high and on a clear day has quite extraordinary views across the Cleveland plain stretching to the Pennines 50 miles away. It's managed by the National Trust and a spur of the Cleveland Way National Trail runs up to the summit.

Surfing

Saltburn is a terrific place to go surfing and is suitable for all ages and all levels, there are a number of surf schools and surf shops in the town. Sandsend is a great place to go surfing as is the long stretch of sand between Whitby to Sandsend, especially if there's a low tide and a south-westerly wind.

18 mins. Egton Bridge...

... is a lovely spot for exploring, walking, cycling, eating and drinking - highly recommended if you're staying at Staithes View.

27 mins. Goathland...

... was famous for 20 years as the setting for ITV's hit show Heartbeat. It's especially lovely late summer when the heather comes into bloom and another spot popular with guests at Staithes View.

The Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way National Trail is a 109 mile walking route through beautiful and ever-changing landscapes and scenery. Staithes View is perfectly positioned to enjoy the trail - you can pick it up two miles from Staithes View in Boulby and head south to Staithes, Port Mulgrave, Runswick Bay, Sandsend, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and along to Filey, or else north to Skinningrove, Saltburn, then inland to Helmsley.

Fishing

Boat fishing TV's Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse headed for Staithes when they wanted to try their hand at sea fishing on the North Yorkshire Coast Head to the harbours in Scarborough, Whitby and Staithes for sea angling options in summer months; you'll find no shortage of sandwich boards of fishermen touting their trips.
